Course Overview

This topic outlines and gives numerous case examples of usefulness of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for triage of cases, error detection, and potential reasons for missed diagnosis.  Opportunities to make the initial diagnosis are given, as well as both cine and single image captures in multiple cases of pulmonary embolus detected by AI algorithms.

Learning Objectives

1. Artificial intelligence can have multiple purposes when applied to pathology screening, including primary diagnosis, patient triage, and error checking.

2. Studies for CTPA must include multiple planes of scanning.   All series must be scrutinized as best conspicuity is obtained when the PE orientation is parallel to the scan plane.

3. Detection of small or incidental pulmonary emboli is very important, as a high number of patients go on to develop recurrent emboli and sudden death.  Most guidelines do not differentiate therapy based on symptomatic vs asymptomatic patients.
