Course Overview

Presented by Vincent Mellnick, MD at Practical Radiology 2025. The upper gastrointestinal tract can be oft-overlooked site of disease in the emergency department patient, but is frequently be the site of pathology, including inflammation/infection, ischemia, obstruction, perforation, and hemorrhage. This talk will discuss common (and some uncommon) conditions causing these presentations in the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum, with emphasis on CT findings.

Learning Objectives


1. Utilize CT, and as needed, fluoroscopy, to identify and characterize acute conditions of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum
2. Create an appropriate differential diagnosis based on the clinical history, anatomic location and imaging findings for a case
3. Differentiate conditions which require urgent surgical consultation vs. conservative management
